14th International Fall Stereology Workshop
“Applications of Unbiased Stereology
To Neural Systems”
November 12-14, 2008, Kent Island, Maryland
followed immediately by the
37th Annual Meeting of the
Society For Neurosciences
(November 15-19, 2008)
The Original Stereology Workshop
In the early 1990s Dr. Peter R. Mouton, a faculty member of the Department of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, organized the first intensive three-day stereology workshop. The first Fall Stereology Workshop was held in the Fall of 1995 at an historic waterfront lodge on the eastern shore of Maryland. By that time journal editors and grant reviewer had begun to favor state-of-the-art stereological methods for morphometric analysis of biological tissue, and that trend was expected to continue. This intensive workshop trained students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty from the neurosciences, psychology, toxicology, and pathology in the applications of stereological approaches to their research projects.
In the past decade over 1100 neuroscientists from academia, government agencies, and private industry have completed stereology training programs organized by the SRC in the USA, Canada, and Europe. In 2008, the 3-day International Stereology Workshop returns to Kent Island, the site of the first Stereology Workshop in 1995, with the Fall Stereology Workshop to be held on November 12-14, 2008, and followed by the Annual Meeting of the Society For Neurosciences in Washington, D.C. on November 15-19, 2008.
Purpose
-
To familiarize participants with the theory and practice of modern stereology as applied to neural structure.
-
To improve participants' skills in experimental design and critical analysis of quantitative morphometry of neural structure, with emphasis on design-based (unbiased) stereological approaches.
-
To provide training in computerized stereology systems and related equipment.
-
To maintain an informal environment for fruitful exchange of information between stereologists, neuroscientists, and developers of technology interested in the morphological analysis of tissue sections.
