Spring 2010 American Stereology ShortCourse
"Applications of Unbiased Stereology
To Neural Systems"
Friday, March 26, 2010
in Tampa-St.Petersburg, Florida, USA

Learn the principles and practices of unbiased stereology while relaxing in the glorious sunshine and pristine beaches of Southwest Florida.

Since the early 1990s, journal editors and grant reviewers have favored state-of-the-art stereological methods for quantitative analysis of biological structure. This course will train participants in the applications of unbiased stereology to neural systems, all in a collegial, informal atmosphere.
Purpose
To familiarize participants with the theory and practice of modern stereology as applied to neural structure.
-
To improve participants' skills in experimental design and critical analysis of quantitative morphometry of neural structure, with emphasis on design-based (unbiased) stereological approaches.
-
To provide training in computerized stereology systems and related equipment.
-
To maintain an informal environment for fruitful exchange of information between stereologists, neuroscientists, and developers of technology interested in the morphological analysis of tissue sections.
Course Organizer/Instructor
This course is organized by Peter R. Mouton, Ph.D., a neuroscientist, stereologist and the official United States representative for the International Society for Stereology. In 1994 Dr. Mouton established this Stereology Training series at the Department of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Since then, his courses have trained thousands of technicians, programmers, postdoctoral fellows, biomedical scientists and laboratory directors from academia, government agencies, and private industry in the principles and practices of unbiased stereology. Dr. Mouton is the Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Stereology Resource Center, and Professor at the Byrd Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute, University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida.
