Stereology workshops and education services

Expert Instructors, State-of-the-Art Training, Professional Advice

Acquisition of expertise with design-based stereology involves three steps:

  • Understand the principles and practices of the methodology through formal training with experienced instructors.
  • Obtain affordable and reliable computerized equipment for maximal efficiency of data collection.
  • Complete and publish results of your studies.

The purpose of the Stereology Resource Center is to provide professional support at each step in this process.

Expert instructors at both Stereology Workshops™ and Stereology ShortCourses™ deliver cutting-edge training in the principles and practices of unbiased (design-based) stereology. This comprehensive program of instruction uses a proven combination of formal PowerPoint lectures, hands-on exercises, practical discussions, and computerized demonstrations, all in an informal, collegial atmosphere. One-on-one interactions with instructors focus on the practical information needed to move forward with your projects, to publish your results, and to strengthen applications for extramural funding.

Over A Decade Of Proven Results

Since 1995, over 1200 participants have completed Stereology Workshops™ and Stereology ShortCourses™, published 850+ stereology-related papers in peer-reviewed journals, and received millions of dollars for stereology-related projects from public and private grant agencies.

Comments from participants at recent Stereology Workshops

"This course exceeded all of my expections, really increased my skills in neural applications of unbiased stereology. Excellent faculty, I appreciate all of the individualized attention."

Participant comments from course evaluation form
13th Annual International Stereology Workshop
San Diego, CA, Fall 2007

"The Stereology Workshop provides a thorough introduction to stereological principles used for testing specific laboratory hypotheses.  The instruction starts at a basic level, then demonstrates the scientific and statistical rigor of the methodology. The course is designed to cover a wide array of techniques and to offer instruction and feedback on participants' projects.  I returned from the workshop with more potential projects than I brought, and immediately to use the approaches in several projects.  I highly recommend this course and especially enjoyed the interaction with the instructors and other participants."

"This Short ShortCourse was just exactly what I had hoped it would be! Almost every single item presented was something I will be able to put to good use - it was probably the single most informative day I have EVER spent at any conference or seminar. I advise everyone who uses, reviews, or even reads anything based on stereology to do whatever necessary to attend a similar seminar."

Many, many thanks,

"This is my second stereology course. The other one was a 5-day course offered by another group. I learned much more at this course!

"The Stereology Workshop was a worthwhile way to spend three or four days. Concepts were presented clearly and followed by hands-on exercises. The low student-teacher ratio allowed each participant to receive input on specific projects from their laboratories. If you need stereology in your work but don't know how to get started, this is a great course."

"I found the Stereology Workshop a superbly stimulating introduction to what is fast becoming the only robust approach to morphometric quantification in neural tissues. A real treat to be able to receive such information from some of stereology's original pioneers!"
