The 16th Annual Fall Stereology Workshop
“Applications of Unbiased Stereology
To Neural Systems”
November 10-12, 2010
San Diego, CA
The Stereology Workshop will be followed by the
39th Annual Meeting of the
Society For Neurosciences
in San Diego.
In the early 1990s, Peter R. Mouton, Ph.D., a faculty member of the Department of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, organized the first comprehensive three-day Stereology Workshop in the United States. Shortly thereafter, journal editors and grant reviewers began to favor state-of-the-art stereological methods for morphometric analysis of biological tissue. Since that time, design-based (unbiased) stereology has become the method of choice for morphometric analysis of biological tissue.
Over 1700 scientists from academia, government agencies, and private industry have completed SRC-sponsored stereology training programs in the USA, Canada, and Europe. In 2010, the 16th Annual Fall International Stereology Workshop will be held in San Diego, CA. Each year tis intensive course trains a small group of interested students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty from the neurosciences, psychology, toxicology, and pathology in the applications of stereological approaches.
Purpose
- To familiarize participants with the theory and practice of modern stereology as applied to neural structure.
- To improve participants' skills in experimental design and critical analysis of quantitative morphometry of neural structure, with emphasis on design-based (unbiased) stereological approaches.
- To provide training in computerized stereology systems and related equipment.
- To maintain an informal environment for fruitful exchange of information between stereologists, neuroscientists, and developers of technology interested in the morphological analysis of tissue sections.
Course Organizer/Instructor
This workshop will be led by Dr. Peter R. Mouton, Chief Scientific Officer of the Stereology Resource Center, is an highly experienced neuroscientist and stereologist, and the official United States representative for the International Society for Stereology. The course follows the format of Dr. Mouton's book, “Principles and Practices of Unbiased Stereology: An Introduction For Bioscientists,” published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.
Instructors
Arun M. Gokhale, Ph.D., Professor of Materials Sciences and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA.
Jeffrey M. Long, Ph.D., Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology, National Institutes on Aging, National Institutes of Health, Baltimore, MD.
Kebreten F. Manaye, M.D., Associate Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, D.C.
Program Features
- Formal lectures by expert stereologists, materials scientists, mathematicians, and neuroscientists.
- Hands-on exercises
- One-on-one sessions with participants and instructors
- Demonstrations of state-of-the-art computerized technology and stereology-related equipment.
- Concepts and exercises will be presented in a progressive manner; therefore, participants should plan to attend all sessions.
- Participants will make short five minute presentations of their research projects for group discussion.
- Participants will receive a 120-page workbook containing instructional material, practical teaching aids, and up-to-date references.
