BACKGROUND

On Tuesday, May 3, 2005, Dr. Peter R. Mouton of the Stereology Resource Center (http://www.disector.com) and Dr. Keith A. Young, of Texas A&M University will present a one-day Short Course in Unbiased Stereology at the Magnolia Hotel in Houston, Texas.

During the past 15 years, unbiased stereology has become the state-of-the-art methodology for morphometric analysis of biological tissue in the neurosciences, psychology, toxicology, and pathology.

This short course provides an abbreviated version of the 3-4 day International Fall Stereology Workshop taught annually since 1995 in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Society For Neurosciences.

Established in 1994 by Stereology Resource Center in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, these short courses and workshops have trained over 500 scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate/undergraduate students in the principles and practices of modern stereology.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • To familiarize participants with the theory and practice of modern stereology as applied to neural structure.
  • To improve participants' skills in experimental design and critical analysis of quantitative morphometry of neural structure, with emphasis on design-based (unbiased) approaches.
  • To demonstrate cutting-edge computerized approaches to design-based stereology.
