For the purpose of testing an hypothesis the BV (biological variation) is the most important source of variation. Biological variation provides the true variation between individuals that is the basis for analyzing possible group differences. Because the biological variation is defined at the level of the population rather than at the level of the sample, we cannot determine the biological variation; that is, not without the value of the parameter for every individual in the population. Fortunately, we can estimate the biological variation from the two other quantities, the CV and CE, derived from the sample estimates in our pilot study. This approach permits us to optimize the sampling scheme in the study for maximum efficiency. |
