The Disector.com MissionThe Stereology Research Center's mission is to provide biomedical researchers with state-of-the-art, efficient, and affordable resources for the stereological analysis of biological tissue. Disector.com, our website and named after the first principle of stereology is an extension of our centers mission to the on-line world. A brief historyIn the early 1990s reviewers of scientific journals and funding applications in the United States began to fault scientific proposals and manuscripts that failed to account for well-known sources of stereological bias. The only resources for biomedical reserachers were the peer-review literature and occassional courses led by stereologists with an emphasis on theoretical, not practical, stereology. At that time the peer review literature in stereology, geology, biology, and mathematics was the only source of information, and only a few individuals were trained in the applications of unbiased stereology to biomedical research. The computerized systems available were programmed for basic procedures only and not supported by trained stereologists. Disector.com (Stereology Resource Center)In the mid 1990s, a team of bioscientists, stereologists, and computer engineers entered into a collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to coordinate the necessary resources for the effective application of modern stereological methods to biomedical research. These resources supported the establishment of Stereology Units at a number of reserach institutions in the U.S., Canada, and abroad. In 2000 the SRC was incorporated as the first organization devoted to the support of biomedical scientists in research projects involving stereology.
