Organic Stereology
Like a well-designed survey or poll focused on finding the truth about a given population, design-based (unbiased) stereology uses unbiased sampling combined with unbiased geometric probes to quantify first-order (Number, Volume, Length, Surface Area) and second-order parameters, e.g., Variation, Spatial Distribution. Organic stereology is the application of these approaches to biological objects in organic tissue, such as cells, fibers, blood vessels, etc. Because organic stereology is based on sound mathematical and statistical principles, rather than faulty models and non-verifiable assumptions, these approaches are increasingly preferred by the rank-and-file members of the international bioscience research community, as well as a growing number of journal editors
and grant reviewers.
In 2000, Dr. Peter R. Mouton founded the Stereology Resource Center
(SRC), a Maryland-based company, with the goal to provide a comprehensive suite of services, products, and professional support to
biomedical researchers for their studies that involve organic stereology. The SRC recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of providing thousands of customers worldwide with stereology-related training,
computerized
systems, books,
outsourcing, and consultation.
